Found out... In the top horizontal bar there's an "applet" for
the sound I had not noticed. A right click on it shows two options (in
French) which
are "sourdine" (no sound) (the box is marked off by default) and
"préférences" (preferences).
No sound "by default", I should have known better.

No sound whatsoever with any application. Same with a Live-CD. Not (I repeat :
Not) a hardware problem. Immediately occured after uptdate from 9.04 to 9.10.
