Right, your issue is that the slmodemd is hogging the sound device,
and PulseAudio's module-udev-detect is bailing (perhaps incorrectly,
see my blog post) upon detecting this modem driver:

D: module-udev-detect.c: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0
is busy: yes

Two workarounds are given in my blog post, and to summarise you can
use module-detect instead of module-udev-detect, or you can kill
slmodemd.

I can't list audio in my Karmik Koala in TOSHIBA SATELLITE A100-849. In "Sound 
Preferences" there are no devices in hardware tab. In previous Ubuntu 9.04 
sounds were up and running
