this is not an issue with linux, but grub
however (afaik) grub doesn't search in other partitions for kernels
the solution to this is: usually there are soft links /vmlinuz and /initrd.img
that point to the latest {kernel|initrd} version, and installing a new kernel
updates those links
so if you point your grub to those, you're done (that's how I do it)
