Here for kernel folks what the forum post mentioned above suggests: "Checked dmesg after that. "Option.ko" was loaded but it didn't recognize my modem. So i looked into the "option.c" source file and turns out it has AC8710 hard-coded with 0xFFF1 instead of 0xFFFF as the product id. I simply recompiled the "option.c" source file after editing 0xFFF1 to 0xFFFF, copied the compiled option.ko file to /lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/drivers/usb/serial, did a "depmod -a" and finally "modprobe option". Now my modem is recognized and working as soon as i plug it in."
