Well, it seems that the problem is related to the default allocation of partitions created if the BIOS is not 48-bit LBA capable and the HD is big enough. For me the solution was setting up a small primary partition at the drive beginning and mounting it as /boot, then using an extended partition and creating swap and / logical partitions inside it.
