The problem resolved itself on two of my machines when upgrading to Karmic release. One machine, however, still wouldn't unlock the screen.
I found the solution for my situation at bug #299717. I needed to fix the group assigned to /etc/shadow. The solution was to: chgrp shadow /etc/shadow kscreenlocker unlocks now. I'm not sure if I messed the group up while doing a bulk add of users, or if Alpha 6 didn't set the group right. Fresh installs of Karmic release appears to not show the problem.
