I was able to work around this as described above. More specifically: - the hardware isn't detected until bcmwl-modaliases is installed/reinstalled (see 455509). My guess is that installing bcmwl-kernel-source did this for you. - Once that's all set (I rebooted, not sure if that's necessary or not), you can activate it with restricted driver manager, then reboot again, and it seems to work
