Well, this is very frustrating, this morning with 9.04 everything worked
fine and now with 9.10 try as I might I can't get any sound out. I'm
obviously missing some vital step but I don't know what it is. I've
purged and reinstalled alsa-base and pulseaudio, redone the
modifications several times and tried stop/start/reboots etc. Maybe I
should go back to 9.04?

As others have said, it seems strange that such a popular soundcard
(surely *the* most popular, for musicians) should be so hard to setup in
a major distribution. I suppose I'll try another distro :(
