WORKAROUND :
Found a different model of mouse and plugged it at the same time and it worked
(first mouse still frozen and hung and unplugging and reinserting it has no
effect) !
some other people with frozen or hung mice seem to suggest playing with
acpi=noirq
and in the meantime i might try that
I'll also let you know if my 'alternative' mouse is any more reliable
