What Michel Boisset said also happens on my PC. My default resolution is 1280 x 1024.
I changed my resolution to 1024 x 768 and then enabled desktop effects. The black desktop problem didn't happen. Then, without disabling desktop effects, I changed my resolution to 1280 x 1024.
