Hi Geriborg,  In the end, what I had to do was:
1) purge Openoffice and any program having anything to do with openoffice, 
delete local directory configurations ,etc.
2) Make sure you reinstall java properly
3) Download the installation zip file from the openoffice.org website, and 
decompress it with file-roller
4) From the DEB directory, install all deb files with "sudo dpkg -i *deb" (I 
know this is not the most prudent move in the world)
5) Move to the subdirectory to install the "desktop integration", still with 
"sudo dpkg -i *deb"
...now it works very smoothly.  No need to go back to Windows...misery!  I 
really hope someone can understand what is happening, though.  If any system 
configuration info is required  to solve this issue, please let me know.
