I had a lot of problems too because of that reason, of which most problems were 
solved after selecting the 'right' kernel.
The touchpad problems remains though.

However I realize I got the touchpad working with the 'wrong' kernel by doing 
the following:
echo options psmouse proto=exps > /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.modprobe

Maybe that has something to do with it...
Will try undoing that change.
