Same Dell 9400 here, same problem. Ok it's a "hardware bug". But from Warty to to Jaunty it was possible to workaround this by assigning manually which channel should controled by the applet and the multimedia buttons.
Is there really no way to do this now with Gnome 2.28 ?? Don't tell me those values are hardcoded ?
