Public bug reported:

When installing Feisty herd 4 from i386 alternate CD on a Gigabyte GA-
965G-DS3 motherboard, the process stalls on the following step:

Detecting disks and all other hardware
Loading module 'via82cxxx' for 'IDE chipset support'...

Reproduction steps:
1. Install Feisty herd 4 from i386 alternate CD
2. Answer the following questions: Language, Country, Keyboard,

Expected result:
The installation process should then process to ask more questions like
Partition and so forth.

Actual result:
The installation process stalls for a long time with the message "Trying to
enable the frame buffer" on a black background before prompting for the
language. The process also stalls for a long time while detecting hardware to
find CD-ROM drives. Then, it seems to stall forever with the message "Loading
module 'via82cxxx' for 'IDE chipset support'...

As suggested in bug #80503, I tried installing Feisty herd 4 with the
pci=nommconf kernel option. However, that seems to prevent detection of
the IDE controller and I am prompted to select a controller from a list
of drivers. Which one should I select?

Unfortunately, the networking is not enable this early in the
installation process so I cannot retrieve the syslog from the machine.
However, I can tell you that the last lines of the syslog consist of the
following:

hw-detect: insmod
/lib/modules/2.6.20-8-generic/kernel/drivers/ide/pci/via82cxxx.ko
init: Starting pid 3118, console /dev/vc/2: 'bin/sh'

** Affects: Ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
