Had this problem.  Indeed, Eclipse started up after 15 minutes, with the
info that the gcj java runtime is being used.  It continued to be very
slow and crashed with an OutOfMemory exception after a while.

I used update-java-alternatives to switch to java-6-sun (which I had
been using before, no idea why that got changed during the update) and
eclipse started normally.
