Hi Jackphone,
You might try removing pulseaudio completely. set up everything to work through 
ALSA (the bit where you test the sounds, cant remember now as I'm not using 
ubuntu at the moment).  

What does pulseaudio do anyway, and why did ubuntu (and most other
desktop distros) adopt it so readily?
