Had same problem on Compaq Armada E-500, 256 MB RAM and Gateway 9300 solo, 288 MB. Could not load 9.04 Ubuntu, Crunchbang Linux 9.04 Lite. Had to stay with 8.10 and upgrade to 9.04, to 9.10. To tell you the truth I don't know why I ever left 8.10-loaded great, ran great on both laptops. Found by removing games, cards, open office after installing everything ran even better. I don't know why everything is so heavily loaded with garbage the average user never uses on the live CD. I'd love to try Mint 7 but don't currently have the ram to do so. One thing I'm totally pissed about-can't blank or burn CD's on either laptop. Get RLIMIT_MEMLOCK, and not one thread in Google can explain simply in non- geek how the hell to correct the situation. HELP!
