Ah, the source of your troubles is from a faulty upgrade. Notice that you are still running the Jaunty kernel (2.6.28) instead of the Karmic kernel (2.6.31). This should be fixable by running 'sudo update-grub' in the terminal and then reboot. Also, after rebooting, you may have to un-mute all of the sound settings in the mixer controls.
