Thanks for you suggestion WeatherGod - I tried it, but alas it makes no difference.
Something I perhaps should have added in my initial report, is that when I plug my headphones in, I do get sound through my laptop's speakers. This is my only method I have of getting sound, though as I'm sure you'll agree, not that convenient! Though I am not that competent at fiddling with linux, clearly some of the packages relating to sound do work. Any ideas how best I can make the speakers work normally without always requiring headphones to be plugged in?
