https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes upgrade from 8.04 to 9.10
is not supported and might leave your system in an unusable state.
Please upgrade to 9.04 first and then upgrade to 9.10. If you still have
the problem please reopen the bug. Thanks.
