Fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 seemed to be fine on a machine with XP on 1st partition of single HDD box. On re-boot my PC did not show any Grub menu and happily booted into XP, clearly using NTLDR. I resolved this by changing the type of parition used for Ubuntu 9.10. Instead of using a logical drive (within the extended partition), I gave it a primary partition of its own. Voila! Perfect install of Ubuntu 9.10 with Grub properly installed on MBR. Strange though, this install was to replace Linux Mint Elyssia and Mint had no problem installing on the logical drive that Ubuntu 9.10 disliked so much.
