Found the problem. When I'm using two monitors (laptop display and an external lcd monitor), the buttons do not appear in Openoffice. When I disconnect the external lcd monitor (logout and login again) the buttons appear.
Something to do with Xorg? But only related to Openoffice? The other applications work well (firefox also).
