Hello friends! I too wanted to do this, and I found a simple answer:
Install a free program called Ubuntu Tweak. ( http://www.ubuntu- tweak.com ) It'll not only do what you're looking for, but a tom of other things as well. It's on my "must have" list of 3rd party addons. Any addons you can't live without? I'd be interested in hearing.
