It has since become apparent that I misinterpreted this bug as relating to VirtualBox with Win7 guest (as the apparent common factor) when it now appears that the cause related to the presence of a memory card in the card reader. When no card was present, suspend and resume were fine (even with VirtualBox VMs running).
