I had the same issue, I have an Acer Aspire 6930G. Karmic didn't even start installing with the live cd without acpi=off, I guess it needs net connection to get along.
I have tested both 32 and 64 bit fixed kernels from http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp386468-karmic/ and they work just fine. I second importance of this bug being raised please?
