Me too. This is caused by a mismatch of the video configuration from your old Ubuntu with the new one.
Here is a solution. Log in with recovery mode, move /etc/X11/xorg.conf out, so the system starts without taking into account your old settings. It will boot into a generic/open set of drivers.
