I have found what application is causing the problem.
On Jaunty I have installed global-menu application and after the upgrade to
Karmic global-menu has remained on my system.
When global-menu is disabled gparted starts with no fail.
I did not find out more but I suspect it has something to do with global-menu
can not handle gparted ran as root.
