I can reproduce the problem now: Because I use the "Check Mail" button much more often than the "New Message" button, I wanted to have this order in the toolbar: Check Mail | New | ... Therefore I removed the "New Message..." button from the kontact main toolbar. That's all. Now the issue is always reproducible (see attached demo video).
