I might just have the same problem here. K3b does not detect my
cdrom/rw.

Notice that I found K3b unable to open a handful of files:
strace k3b 2>&1 | grep "No such file or directory" | cut -d\" -f2 | sort -u |
cat -n
/etc/ld.so.nohwcap
/etc/ld.so.preload
/lib/dbus-1
/lib/dbus-1.so.3
/lib/libdbus-1
/lib/tls
/lib/tls/dbus-1
/lib/tls/x86_64
/lib/tls/x86_64/dbus-1
/lib/x86_64
/lib/x86_64/dbus-1
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dbus-1
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tls
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tls/dbus-1
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tls/x86_64
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tls/x86_64/dbus-1
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/x86_64
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/x86_64/dbus-1
/usr/lib/dbus-1
/usr/lib/dbus-1.so.3
/usr/lib/libdbus-1
/usr/lib/locale/en_US.UTF-8/LC_ADDRESS
/usr/lib/locale/en_US.UTF-8/LC_COLLATE
/usr/lib/locale/en_US.UTF-8/LC_CTYPE
/usr/lib/locale/en_US.UTF-8/LC_IDENTIFICATION
/usr/lib/locale/en_US.UTF-8/LC_MEASUREMENT ...

I am on Kubuntu 9.10, i86_64. Using 9.04 i86_64 all worked fine.
