Public bug reported:

Kubuntu release: 9.10 64-bit & 9.04 64-bit
Kernel version: 2.6.31-14-generic & 2.6.28-16-generic
IGP: Nvidia GeForce 8200 (ECS GF8200A (V1.0))
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e

Problem: I'm getting random hard lockups on a fresh install of Kubuntu
9.10. When these lockups occur, my entire screen turns into a single,
solid color. The color varies from brown, white, blue, black, etc. My
keyboard is unresponsive--no led's. I have to hit the reset button to
reboot. The lockups can occur when I'm watching a video, browsing the
web, downloading files, etc. I have no idea what triggers it.

My computer is rock solid on Kubuntu 9.04 with kernel 2.6.28-15. After I
upgraded the kernel to version 2.6.28-16, I started having lockups. I
downgraded back to 2.6.28-15 and now it's stable again. I then installed
9.10 on a separate partition but the lockups came back.

Before I switched to Kubuntu 9.04, I was running Arch Linux and was
experiencing the same problems.

Here are some kernel parameters I have tried with no luck:

*idle=poll
*maxcpus=1
*all combos of noapic, irqpoll, and pci=routeirq
*noapic pci=assign-busses apicmaintimer idle=poll reboot=cold,hard
*noapic nolapic
