Hi Daniel, to answer your questions:

This computer has gone through a few upgrades since it last had a clean 
install, I'm afraid - it was definitely upgraded from Hardy to Jaunty, and 
possibly more before that.

Update-manager did pop up a list of packages that it said were no longer needed 
and asked if I wanted it to remove them.  To be honest, I don't remember the 
exact details, but it's safe to assume that Enigmail was in the list and that I 
thought it had been renamed or something like that.  Although, if the only way 
to keep a package that update-manager thinks is unneeded is to also keep lots 
of other unneeded packages, then that's a rather poor design.  (Disk space may 
be cheap, but the accumulation of cruft is never good.)

Sorry if this is a less-than-helpful bug report, I was rather surprised
to find something I used had gone during the upgrade  :-)
