My wife's laptop is also experiencing this problem. The computer successfully suspends, but on waking it hangs on a black screen so we have to do a hard reset (turn it off) and reboot. After logging in, Ubuntu reports that there was a "Serious Kernel Problem" and that the computer could not resume properly after a previous suspend. She's running a core 2 processor with an ATI card. Not sure of the specs, but I can get them if you think it would help. Let me know if you need more information, detailed instructions would be appreciated.
