Actually nevermind, the original report included the apt logs. So
looking at them one error jumps out:
2009-10-10 05:48:25,479 ERROR NvidiaDetection returned a error: datadir
'./modaliases/' not found
Not sure whether that is a hard failure or a warning, but interesting.
