That is odd that the update-grub command is missing...
Ok, let's do this...
First, let's install the 'grub-choose-default' package:

sudo apt-get install grub-choose-default

Once that completes, you can then run this program:

sudo grub-choose-default

It will ask if you want to create a default saved file, click on "OK"

Then click on the button for the highest numbered kernel.  Should be
something like 2.6.31-XX

After that, just reboot.
