bostongeek24, do note that there are very little differences between UNR and the normal Ubuntu installation, besides the interface. If you wish not to use the UNR interface, you may be better off just installing the normal Ubuntu.
In the meantime, I will do some follow-up to find out what is the plan for Karmic with regards to this issue. The last I heard is that Lucid will allow the user to choose the desktop manager at login.
