Public bug reported:
I upgraded to 9.10 (using Update Manager). On the first restart I saw
Grub, then a white Ubuntu logo then a strange colour cycling effect the
screen went white then blue then yellow orange then black. The screen
was completely blank. I could not switch to another console. The system
responded to CTRL-ALT-DEL and restarted.
I added 'nomodeset' (after trying a few other things) to the kernel boot
parameters and the screen did work from then on. I could logon, and use
my laptop fine after that.
Removing 'nomodeset' restores the buggy behaviour.
