This bug should have high priority. When installing Karmic on a friends computer it was stalled at the point that it said "configuring apt." We waited a few minutes and then got this crash report. Then we waited another 2 and there was no movement, so we decided to hit "skip." This resulted in "apt" not being installed on his system.
I'm in here because I just had the same thing happen to me, and had the presence of mind not to hit "skip" this time.
