This bug should have high priority.

When installing Karmic on a friends computer it was stalled at the point
that it said "configuring apt."  We waited a few minutes and then got
this crash report.  Then we waited another 2 and there was no movement,
so we decided to hit "skip."    This resulted in "apt" not being
installed on his system.

I'm in here because I just had the same thing happen to me, and had the
presence of mind not to hit "skip" this time.  This bug will likely
cause thousands of newbs like us to hit "skip" at a very important part
of the installation process.
