Tried it again using the Alternate CD, but without any luck. Now did do
some formatting (not the whole disk, but a 100Gb /home), to result in a
failure to load the kernel. Still using NOLAPIC. Read something on LVM
and tried to set this up, but this resulted in a very strange partition
table (afaics). With LVM setup, the progress stopped after 33%
formatting was complete.

By the way, the MB's chipset is 945GSE Express and not the quoted i945.

Wonder if it may be something with the HDs themselves, but little chance
that both have technical shortcomings.
