Regarding 100% CPU usage and the system freezing/hanging when on battery
power - I could see that when this happens, there are lots of w, pidof
and killall processes. When I connect again to AC power, the system
calms down again.

The issue mentioned in comment #3 does not seem to occur anymore. I have
no idea why - there have been some updates and in my desperation I have
changed quite a few settings of the gnome-power-manager in gconf-editor.
