** Description changed:

I'm gonna explain the problem. To let my AUDIO soundcard work (i have an
Intel ICH 889) I have to install updated Alsa drivers and properly
configure them. After that, I can use PulseAudio (or better, I HAVE TO
- use pulseaudio) as audio server + ALSA.
+ use pulseaudio*) as audio server + ALSA.

This integration has been successful also because of a small utility,
called "asoundconf" ( "asoundconf-gtk" for the GUI) that helps me
selecting PULSEAUDIO as source for APLAY, G-streamer codecs, YouTube,
etc etc... This "asoundconf" is not available any more in Alsa-Utils,
because they say it's gonna be deprecated.

Problem is... Out of the box if I just select 'Pulseaudio' as preferred
in Gnome-Audio panel and using alsaconf... SOME APPLICATION STILL USES
  ALSA AND NOT PULSEAUDIO.

- For instance it happens for the flash codec, while I am watching a video on

+ For instance it happens for the flash codec, while I am watching a video on
youtube:
  - I start youtube first: then any other application (e.g. Amarok) keeps being
silent (audio channel is "stolen" by alsa)
  - I start Amarok (e.g.) forst... : youtube is silent (PulseAudio stole it
first)

To solve this issue i had to grab the original script "asoundconf" from
a Jaunty distribution: NOW EVERYTHING works flawlessly and pulseaudio
also works with firefox, gstreamer, aplay, anything.

+
+ (*) I have to use pulseaudio because it's the only way to avoid audio
contention among applications... and it works flawlessly
