Actually, I have a pretty good understanding of linux imho (I'm a full-time developer with some experience on writing device drivers, though rarely doing kernel hacking), but I must admit that I don't know much about sound drivers and obviously wasn't able to fix the sound myself. And that's exactly the problem, because this is even harder for the famous "average joe"...
