I tested it again from scratch:

1. Installed Kubuntu 6.10 Desktop CD i386 in a VMWare. All defaults
except Language and username ("martin").

2. After reboot and login, I looked at the groups:
$ sudo getent group users
Password:
users:x:100:

3. Installed LaTeX:
$ sudo apt-get install tetex-extra
...
...

4. Tested a little LaTeX document. When texing it, I see messages like
"/usr/share/texmf/web2c/mktexupd: /var/cache/fonts/ls-R unwriteable."

But now the document is processed correctly, and all the LaTeX stuff
under /var has permissions "drwxrwxrwt root root", so creating the font
files seems to be no problem.

tex-common/groupname_multi is still set to "users", but it seems to be
no problem. all created files belong to the created user
("martin/martin") but are world writable.

I don't know if anything was changed, but it works now and I don't know
what happened. So I'd say we close this bug until it hits someone else.

Ciao

Martin
