Hi Nigel.
So, I specifically posted this bug report using the ubuntu-bug
comand on pidgin using this second machine. I would have been happy to
post the relevent information about pidgin WORKING in the report about
it NOT, however, my experience (which may perhaps be incomplete) is that
when using ubuntu-bug to report a duplicate issue, none of the
dependency information is transmitted to launchpad.
While this ticket. specifically, may not report a BUG, it does report
specific, and useful information to assist in tracking down the bug itself.
Inconsistant behavior is a bug, whether the inconsistent behavior is desired or
not. I'd prefer for my program to crash in a reproduceable way in every case.
Because this is the one machine I have encountered so far that does NOT hang on
this specific link, I consider this important information.
Additionally, I was not the one who posted this bug. The person who
owns and operates this machine is an acquaintance of mine who knows
little to nothing about computers aside from that Ubuntu Just Works
(tm). So, while Its EXCELLENT that Ubuntu (our operating system of
choice) DID just work for her in this specific case, its incredibly
useful and interesting to know of this specific difference in behavior.
Until launchpad makes it simple for regular users to correctly report
useful information like this, I'll unfortunately have to continue having
them file new bug tickets and them manually duplicate, or otherwise link
them to the problem ticket that they want to report.
In addition to that, I am indeed able to reproduce the bug. It's so
far occured on my machine 7 times, after a reboot, and through several
prototols on pidgin, and also on 2 other non-technical friend's
computers. Both of these other two friends are unable to understand how
to submit bug tickets through launchpad, and are waiting until I can
physically assist them in submitting the ticket tomorrow or sometime
later this week.
