On further testing, I'm convinced that the problem I saw was due to the machine powering down while it was performing the suspend operation -- the only peculiarity is that the crescent moon light on the machine was lit, as though it had been suspended -- it just didn't respond to any wake-up events. So if there is a bug, it will only be seen by losing power while suspending.
