When using apt-cache policy
replace packagename with the package you are wanting to see the output for.
Can you please pos tthe full output of the following command:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
** Package changed: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu) => update-manager (Ubuntu)
** Changed in: update-manager (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Incomplete
