Public bug reported:

Same as with previous Ubuntu releases, brightness controls on my Asus M50v a1
laptop are not functional since upgrade from 9.04. A fix existed for the
previous releases (back to 8.10), however it did not solve this problem for
9.10. The LCD is permanently and uncomfortably dim and cannot be altered using
the fn+F5/F6 key combination.

No brightness controls for LCD - permanently dim (same issue with previous
Ubuntu releases, but fixes that worked for them did not work for 9.10).
