The connect line from gnome-cups-manager indicates that you are using the usb cups backend. Could you please post the output of the following command to make sure: lpstat -v As indicated before hp-toolbox needs the hp cups backend to work! How to setup your printer using the hp backend is described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HpPrinterInstallationAndMaintenanceDapper.
