Charles,

Looking at your above comments I strongly doubt that the installation of HPLIP 
0.9.10 solved the fact that hp-toolbox was unable to find your printer. The 
connect line from gnome-cups-manager indicates that you are using the usb cups 
backend. Could you please post the output of the following command to make 
sure: lpstat -v
As indicated before hp-toolbox needs the hp cups backend to work! How to setup 
your printer using the hp backend is described here:

I strongly believe your printer works as well with the default HPLIP 0.9.7 in 
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS.
