Okay, here's the kicker: I upgraded to 9.10 and tried playing DVDs again. No dice. The only difference this time was this:

Sense: Read of scrambled sector without authentication Then I thought - just out of despair - maybe it's the DVD and tried my whole collection (11 DVDs - I know). The result: 5 don't play, 6 do. Some of the 5 that don't play are marked "copy protected", some aren't. This sounds like kind of a success but given that I could play any of these a few Ubuntu releases ago still leaves a taste. Especially since I now own store bought copies of "Serenity" and "Matrix" that I can't watch anymore. (BTW: so sad they never made a sequel to Matrix.)
