You've got to be careful here. There is another bug that I filed, incorrectly classified as a duplicate, that has related but in some ways opposite behavior. (I'm traveling and writing this from a hotel room, and it is impossible for me to look up the bug number right now.) In that bug the text is a very large number of equal-sized words set in a fixed width font. Thus they appear to be in columns, but in reality is is not column data. Yet it behaves a bit like column data. If I recall correctly the value that should be in the upper right corner is replaced, in the paste, by the value that displayed directly above it. This makes me think that it perhaps recognizes column stuff from the display layout instead of the internal representation.
