Public bug reported:

On my business laptop (lenovo T61, nvidia), there is Win XP. In order to
be able to have a decent OS when I am on business trips, I got a USB HDD
with Ubuntu. Until some days ago, I had Jaunty on it and it worked like
a charm. After upgrading to Karmic, the system freezes during boot. I
even reinstalled the whole system. After all, I am able to boot in
rescue mode.

Normal Boot, harddisk on USB: Grub is starting. White Ubuntu-Logo
appears on the screen, pulsating. After some seconds, there are two
lines in text mode of the graphics adapter, telling about splash and
resolution. Then it switches to the X-Server, I see Ubuntu and a line
under it with a white bar running from left to right. Then, the system
freezes. First, the LED on the USB hard drive stays on without flashing
for abut 5-10 seconds. Then it switches of for about 5-10 seconds, then
it switches on again, staying on forever, without flashing. Only way to
switch of the laptop is pressing the power button for several seconds.

Normal Boot, change boot parameters, harddisk on USB: I edit the boot
settings in grub2, switch off quiet and splash to see if something goes
wrong in booting. The boot process runns until the acpi-scripts (i
suppose). When the message "Checking Battery Status" appears on the
screen, the system freezes, with the LED of the hard drive acting the
same way as mentioned above. After a long time (don't know exactly,
about a minute or so), the system starts with ext2 fs errors. So it
seems it is not totaly frozen...

When I remove the internal Win XP harddrive and replace it with the
ubuntu harddrive, it boots perfectly.

Unfortunately, I can't provide any logs or similar, as the system
freezes and the network is not up yet to get them. If you got any idea
what I can provide, please let me know.

Summary:
- Karmic on USB will not boot
- Jaunty did before update
- Karmic on same HDD installed internaly boots without problems

Thanks, Edi
